Data & method notes

Each word's letters are shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle and re-shuffled if the result matches the original. Words made of a single repeated letter cannot be scrambled and are left as-is. See the methodology page.

Frequently asked questions

Will a scrambled word ever come out the same as the original?

No — as long as the word has at least two different letters, the tool re-scrambles until the result differs, and short words get extra shuffling so they are not too obvious.

Can I print a separate answer key?

Yes. Toggle the answer key on to review it, and the print layout can include it on its own so students only see the problems.

What difficulty levels are there?

Easy keeps the first letter in place as a hint; Medium and Hard fully scramble each word, with Hard also shuffling the order of the list.

How do I save it as a PDF?

Click “Save as PDF” and choose “Save as PDF” in your browser’s print dialog. The layout fits A4 and US Letter and hides the site menus and ads.
